Incorporated professionals got hit hard in yesterday's budget. The biggest impact for many will be the increase in the capital gains inclusion rate for every dollar of capital gains in their corporation. Let's look at the math to see how bad it is.

News flash: most business owners don't have pension plans. What they have is a business that they were planning to sell when the time comes to retire. The capital gains hike is a direct attack on the retirements of those who spent their careers building the Canadian economy.

I'm delighted to be involved in this Telegraph campaign to tear down the COVID relics. Dozens of MPs are backing our calls - Govt should instruct all public sector organisations to remove all signs, stickers and the rest. Let's clean up our country. telegraph.co.uk/news/2024/05/1…

I know this isn’t record setting but a lifetime best 335 squat at age 43 feels pretty good. With an extra rep just for fun.

Today Arif Virani released a video filled with misleading tax advice that could cost Canadians big time. My colleague and tax lawyer @PLawrenceMP tax lawyer joined me to debunk his claims. You'll want to read this whole 🧵:

Just joined the 1000lb club at age 43. It’s all downhill from here. 380 Squat (PR) 255 Bench 365 Deadlift (PR) If you need me I will be awake in a few days. Night night.

🇨🇦’s public safety minister just said less than 1% of 🇺🇸’s fentanyl is from 🇨🇦, and ditto for illegal immigrants. Here's why that's a whopper of a lie. Warning: Your opinion of 🇨🇦 will irreversibly change. <thread> 🧵👇

Breaking News: as of today everything Canada produces will be classified as “energy”. Win/win since the US will only pay 10% tariffs and Canadians will get to pay more carbon tax.

The impact of buying / supporting local business is significant. People are and should be free to make their own purchasing decisions but the comments on Sid’s post are troubling. Actively choosing to not support local because you think that hurts Trudeau is a strange stance.

Someone explain to me like I’m five - why does Canada both export and import steel / aluminum from the US? If we make more than we need, why import? If me make less than we need, why export?

Shaun Peet (@shaunpeet) 's Twitter Profile Photo

Isn't the idea that Canadian government procurement procedures need to be reviewed in light of the tariffs kind of an issue? Why weren't Canadian government procurement procedures *already* giving significant weight to local sourcing?

Shaun Peet (@shaunpeet) 's Twitter Profile Photo

To be clear, the tariffs talk from the US is not good for Canada. However, when you actually take the time to read the details, they aren't exactly catastrophic either. The reaction to them - and particularly any over-reaction - is where we truly pay the price. Calm down.

The government approved $40B in spending from April 1 - May 15 through a special warrant. This was done because Parliament is prorogued and it’s not possible to make appropriations. The only information shared with Canadians is a list of departments and the total amount.

The more people I talk to, the more I realize that, for most people, "we should buy local" actually means "you all should buy local, I'll buy from wherever I want". Elbows Up - unless I might pay an extra penny to support a local business. It's all virtual signaling.

Shaun Peet (@shaunpeet) 's Twitter Profile Photo

Or, since those meanie tariffs are only applied on things going to the US, we don’t do anything different and just go about our day until the next president removes them.
