Other marine predators, like dolphins, can’t regrow lost teeth. Sharks, on the other hand, never run out of teeth- they’re constantly growing and replacing them. Some species have up to 10 rows of teeth on rotation! When you’re a predator, that’s a serious advantage. 🦈 📸

Sharks are essential for marine biodiversity. Here’s how: 🦈 They regulate fish populations 🐟 They prevent prey species from overgrazing habitats 🌿 They protect coral reefs and seagrass beds 🌊 They keep marine food webs in balance Happy #BiodiversityDay! #TheSharkSwim

This #InternationalDayforBiologicalDiversity, remember: sharks don’t just belong in biodiversity solutions - they strengthen them. As top predators, they support healthy reefs, seagrass, and fish populations. Protect sharks, protect biodiversity. Learn more about FIU College of Arts, Sciences & Education's

Great hammerhead sharks have been observed traveling distances up to 3,000km! 🦈 However, some #hammerheads are homebodies. 🏡 Andros Island in the Bahamas seems to be the perfect neighborhood for these #sharks to stay throughout the year. Read more: bit.ly/43xvXFL

Scientists estimate that longline fisheries in the Pacific Ocean killed half a million blue sharks in just 1 year. Indiscriminate fishing practices drive global #shark declines & worsen the #biodiversity crisis. Sustainable fishing methods are vital for the health of our ocean.

Shark skin is covered in tooth-like structures called dermal denticles. but did you know teeth likely first evolved on the skin? 🦈 More research supports the theory that teeth first evolved outside the mouth, as sensory tools on ancient fish. Check it out:
