❌ I fail, a lot! ❌ Most experiments don’t work out the way I planned/thought, and it feels like I am a failure. But I try hard to remind myself that I’m not alone and that failure is an opportunity to learn. We need to be more open about this! #AcademicTwitter #phdchat

When someone offers you criticism, reflect on: 1. Did I do something wrong? 2. What new knowledge did I gain? 3. Can I improve in the future? Immediately attacking people who offer criticism without taking time for self-reflection is a bad look. #SaturdayMotivation

It doesn’t take an official title to be a leader, and not all people with official titles are leaders. A leader is anyone who recognizes a problem, envisions a solution, and animates those ideas into action. Anyone can be a leader.

Resilience is about making it through, not making it feel easy. Life can be a constant struggle right now, and you might feel like you’re not being “resilient.” But, just getting through each day means you’re developing and demonstrating resilience.

When we're struggling, it can feel like we're not capable of helping or supporting anyone else. But, when you're able to, even just sharing about your struggle is a tangible way to support others. In doing so, you can help them realize that they are not alone.

A lesson I will spend my life trying to master: Wisdom is making decisions today that I will be happy with tomorrow (and into the future).

Creating a healthy lab culture leads to: -more collaboration -less conflict -more focus on research -less energy lost to stress -more creativity -less frustration It’s better for people and better for research.

Being rigorous doesn't have to mean being unkind. It is absolutely possible to set high expectations and then be kind and encouraging as you help people to work toward them.

I'm happy to share one last manuscript from my Ph.D work. We demonstrate that the T7GP4 helicase can break apart reversible quinone methide DNA crosslinks. Surprisingly, adducts on both strands of the DNA are removed by the helicase. doi.org/10.1021/acs.ch…

The purpose of feedback isn’t to make someone feel good or bad, but to help us all grow and get better at what we do. -Praise should be specific. What exactly made something effective or creative? -Critique should be supportive. How can we help each other do better in the future?

Aside from science, #Survivor is a big passion of mine. I have been fortunate enough to be involved with the making of an online version of Survivor (EXPEDITION ) and we are raising money for charity. Visit donations.expedition-online.com for information on the players' charities

There is no single set of metrics that defines a “successful” PhD. Research may be the foundation, but success is about the knowledge and skills gained and how well those prepare you to pursue your future career goals. Success has an individual definition, not a universal one.

Being a scientist should be challenging because science is challenging - we’re trying something that’s never been done and it will probably fail. All of the other challenges should be things we are trying to eradicate.

I'm happy to share my first (co-) first author paper from my postdoctoral work. In our search for RNA PT modifications, we established guidelines for avoiding mass spec artifacts. We validated the initial structure of RNA PTs to actually be RNA 2'-OMe dinucleotides.
