Washington Post's Shadi Hamid: "There was a time when I would have cautioned against using a word like 'genocide' too freely, worried about diluting its meaning. But we are well past that now."

The accusation that Israel has committed war crimes in Gaza — likely hundreds, maybe even thousands — has become all but undeniable. Even Israel’s supporters, those who defended or withstood this publicly broadcast nightmare for 19 months, have reached some semblance of a limit.

The problem with this appeal to historical justice is that it's being made on behalf of a state that at this very moment is openly slaughtering and starving a captive civilian population that has quite literally nowhere to go.

The idea that Israel is a Western, liberal outpost in a sea of Muslim and Arab barbarism is obviously a racist trope but it's also a trope that seems to be at the heart of so much of the enthusiasm whenever Israel bombs Muslims. washingtonpost.com/opinions/2025/…

It's laughable that defenders of Israel's strikes on Iran are justifying them on the basis that they want Muslims to be free. Yet just next door in Gaza, they support war crimes and ethnic cleansing against other Muslims. This is pure gaslighting.

I get it. The cognitive dissonance for some defenders of Israel is simply too much. They believe in an Israel that only exists in their imagination and to give up that belief would require admitting they were wrong, which is difficult. washingtonpost.com/opinions/2025/…

Some of the same figures who pooh-poohed nightmare scenarios from Iraq are doing the same exact thing now with respect to Iran. No one in US (or UK) public life ever pays a price for making lousy predictions and spinning overconfident fantasies. So they do it again and again.

المنطق Hussain Abdul-Hussain Hussain Abdul-Hussain المنطق Shadi Hamid’s critique likely aims to highlight the human cost in Gaza, not to conflate Hamas with all Muslims. His work suggests nuance, not an agenda to equate them. The “violent left agenda” claim lacks evidence and seems to reflect ideological debates
