Jennings et al. results suggest conservation action may be warranted to recover the Black-crowned Night Heron population in the San Francisco Bay area studied, but there is uncertainty on the magnitude of their decline and the reasons for it.

An under-studied contingent of the Striped Bass population is present in the San Joaquin River & its tributaries. Ware et al. compiled incidental observations of Striped Bass (1996-2021) and found they were present at monitoring locations most of the year, but not every year.

Peterson et al. conducted bird surveys in 253 rice checks w/in 177 rice fields in the Sacramento Valley during fall & winter of 2021–22 & 2022–23 for factors that influence bird use of winter-flooded, post-harvest rice fields in the CA Winter Rice Habitat Incentive Program.

Effective waterfowl management relies on relevant demographic data to inform land-management decisions. Mackell et al. suggest UAS could complement the traditional Breeding Population Survey & provide local managers w/ fine-scale, timely info about shifts in regional abundance.

Drawing from a quarter century of involvement with the Interagency Ecological Program, Culberson offers nine overarching observations and reflections about doing good monitoring science in the #SFEstuary to coordinate science across multiple agencies and management imperatives.

Hartman et al. synthesize key findings from the 2023 Delta–Suisun Tidal Wetland Restoration Symposium to describe the progress made monitoring tidal wetlands over the past 10 years. The paper emphasizes historical context, capacity, opportunity, and realized functions.

Deeply subsided islands limit the potential for tidal wetland restoration, integral to achieving the Delta coequal goals. Deverel et al. study the potential for floating peat blocks to create tidal habitat in the subsided western and central Delta using a mesocosm experiment.

O’Leary et al. evaluate the biocomplexity of phenotypic and genetic variation w/in & among populations to determine how species respond to a changing environment. Results emphasize formulating conservation goals to maintain biocomplexity at both phenotypic and genetic levels.

Drought and climate change needs innovative water management actions that balance California's endangered species recovery and water demands. Wang et al. describe an individual-based ecological particle tracking model to assess efficacy of proposed actions.

Rudnick et al. review #BayDelta climate governance & study how it operates, broadly distilling two key dimensions that scholars suggest influence efficacy: the structure of a governance system & the degree of reactivity or proactivity in its processes. bit.ly/4kJ4V6b

#BayDelta residents rely on water exports, yet droughts increase drinking water cost, decrease Ag production, & negatively affect Ag & labor markets. Hartman et al. describe tools to respond to droughts to increase supply, reduce demand, & mitigate actions bit.ly/4iF7Rio

Mahardja et al. examine heatwaves, an extreme event of climate change expected to ⬆️ in duration, intensity, & frequency. Heatwaves cause wide-ranging human health effects: dehydration & heat exhaustion, ⬇️ birth weight, mental health problems, & violence. bit.ly/4iH3vHA
