Sometimes when weights are over and everyone has gone home for the night I like to go out to the field and think of some of the great young men that have come through the programs I’ve been a part of. High school football coaches are some of the luckiest people in the world.

After sweeping undefeated to the Twin Valley title in 1986, Clay Center dropped its last two reg. season games to Clay County C1 neighbors Sandy Creek and Sutton. That didn't stop the Wildcats from rolling thru the C2 playoffs.

The Wildcats opened the postseason with a win over Stromsburg (Curt Wilkerson runs for Clay Center v. the Vikings in pic), and finished it with a win over another Clay County team, Harvard, 13-7.

“It’s a lot more fun when you can coach guys that love ball. That love the weight room. That value education. That want to be coached. That want to be empowered. That want to grow as a man” (Dabo Swinney)

“Every man at some point in his life is gonna lose a battle. He’s gonna fight, and he’s gonna lose. But what makes him a man is that, in the midst of that battle, he does not lose himself.” — Coach Taylor

Great players are coachable players! Coachable players can handle any constructive criticism without becoming angry/disrespectful. No coach wants a player who can’t be corrected without going off the deep end. It’s not ever personal. Just listen & learn. You’ll be better for it!

Almost all athletes can play their best in practice, but not many athletes can play their best in games, when the stakes are high and people are watching. The ability to perform under pressure is what separates champions from everyone else.

Someone you know needs to hear this. Don't be average. Never let good enough be good enough. Keep improving. Don't get complacent. Great things never come from comfort zones. Keep growing. Don't give up. You didn't come this far just to come this far. Keep going.

PLAYERS - The next time you’re annoyed your coach holds you accountable for effort & attitude and asks that you bring your very best in practice and in games day after day then ask yourself ... Would you rather play for a coach that doesn’t care? -via Daniel Makepeace

"On this team, we fight for that inch. On this team, we tear ourselves and everyone else around us to pieces for that inch. We claw with our fingernails for that inch, because we know when we add up all those inches that’s gonna make the difference between winning and losing!"

PLAYERS: It's not your parent's responsibility, your coach's responsibility, or your teammate's responsibility to get you to be coachable and work hard. You control your attitude and effort regardless of the surroundings or circumstances. It's 100% your responsibility.

"I never seen a team win a championship with zero talent. However, I have seen a lot of really talented teams never win a championship. Why? Because you have a bunch of individuals - not playing for each other - not connected. Connected teams are powerful teams." Steve Jones
