Two 1983 ads for arcade games from the trade magazine, Replay. Back in this era arcade games represented the top tier game tech, and employed many of the world's most talented designers.

In every copy of Replay magazine, a trade mag for the arcade industry, they had reviews of the latest games. Here we see reviews for Star Trek (by Sega) and Xevious (Atari). I put in 100+ hrs on Xevious, easily the best scrolling vehicle shooter of its day.

This Top 30 list from my Jan 1981 Softalk issue shows several up-n-coming dev superstars, like Nasir Gebelli, Roberta Williams, Bill Budge, Dani Bunten and Lord British. I looked up to all of these devs back then.

Turbo Overkill makes Eurogamer's list of games you need to play--a list mostly populated with games that had budgets 10 to 50 times more than Turbo. Check out what they said, and let my know if the word "onomatopoeic" had ever crossed your eyeballs before?

This letter of intent gave Apogee the publishing rights to Dark Justice (renamed to Max Payne) and Void (a space action game). But in the final agreement Void was dropped so that Remedy would focus solely on Max. Plus, the budget increased to $2 million.

In 1994 we announced our 3D Realms label, along with our coming PolyTex engine, being developed by Ken Silverman, who developed the Build engine. PolyTex was a 6-degrees-of-freedom engine that Ken had running, but never became usable to make a full game.

A big ad for Exidy's game, Venture, from 1981, appearing in the trade magazine, Replay. I could make it about 3 screens/levels into the game, but it got hard fast! I loved the concept, but not the execution. Anyone else play it?

Solar Quest, by Cinematronics (1981), played a bit like Asteroids but instead of asteroids floating around dangerously, it had enemy spaceships. There was a star in the center that was deadly to touch and would block shots, too. I didn't play this game much.
