Excellent lecture capture research. What struck me in a very thorough review of the literature is how unreliable much of data on attendance levels at lectures is. Surprisingly few studies actually measure directly. This does & finds "marginal but statistically significant" diffs.

Main takeaway from Martin Lynch's presentation at #altc is that #jisc #learninganalytics predictor works well only when it's fed with high quality data. Very accurate predictions of student success with comp sci courses which have attendance monitoring.

Impressed by Bangor Uni's lecture check in tool which overcomes GPS positioning variability issues - the location of the lecture is identified by the "wisdom of crowds" i.e. where most people are positioned - individual student location is stored as distance from the mean.

A paradox occuring to me in recent months is backed up by a survey I've just carried out: institutions have greater need than ever for #learninganalytics but aren't able to develop their capacities in it due to the logistics of suddenly having to teach all their students online
