Zaila Avant-garde, a 14-year-old from New Orleans, won the 2021 Scripps National Spelling Bee Thursday night by correctly spelling the word "murraya.” Zaila becomes the first African American national champion in the spelling bee’s history.

Dear Greg Abbott: 1) It’s disrespectful and insensitive to tell a grieving community that “it could’ve been worse” 2) It could’ve been better if you protected your residents instead of your political agenda 3) The police did rush in to save lives…of their own children.

On Tuesday the 8th, we can vote to: Keep kids safe. Expand Medicaid. Raise the minimum wage. Fully fund our public schools. Restore reproductive freedom. Lower property taxes. Increase teacher pay. Legalize marijuana. Fix the grid. Together, we can vote to move Texas forward.

As polls begin to close in certain parts of the country, if you’re in line at your polling place before it closes—stay in line. Make your voice heard.

We deserve a governor who will fight for all the people of Texas and every community across this state. I’m asking for your vote.
