On this day, April 4, in 1949, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) was founded. Signed in Washington, D.C., the founding members include Belgium, Canada, Denmark, France, Iceland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, the United Kingdom, and the U.S.
