It's possible to predict people's authoritarian/racist attitudes just by knowing what they value most in children -- obedience, respect for elders, and good manners - vs. curiosity, independence, and considerateness...

Smartest thing I heard from a supt recently: As part of reopening planning, arrange a simulated school day (or even 1/2 day) for key stakeholders (supt, bd, union pres, etc) to "attend" school under draft plan. From bus to class to bathroom, walk in their shoes b4 deciding.

Online, checking for understanding will need to entail more than copy and paste-able answers. This is a good thing.

Betsy DeVos just said most schools "gave up" and "did nothing" this past spring.

School reopenings will require some of the most creative, nuanced education policy in a generation. It’s going to be exceedingly complicated, dispiriting and emotionally charged. Today a match was dropped on this tinderbox, making this work even harder.

Students often see poems as a test — one they are pretty sure they won’t do well on — instead of as an outstretched hand from a writer to a reader.

Let’s stop pretending that writing can/should be standardized! Replace your rubrics with mentors that Ss can reject/embrace as they find their own writerly voices!

Ah, you’re preparing kids for the real world... So, you’re... ...allowing retakes. ...extending deadlines. ...allowing resources on tests. ...letting them pursue their passions. ...giving them evenings/weekends off. Thank you. It’s important to prepare them for the world.
