X (Twitter) Alberta is opening two new med school campuses! That’s worth celebrating. We urgently need more physicians - especially outside Edmonton & Calgary. Just opening campuses isn’t enough. Let's build the right kind of medicine for the communities that need it most.

I’ll never forget this moment.: Accepted into medical school. My chest tightened. My hands shook. My dog sat beside me as relief, disbelief, and joy crashed over me all at once. Medicine isn’t just a job. It’s a calling. 👉 Do you remember the moment that changed your life?

Alberta's healthcare system isn’t “broken.” It’s doing exactly what it was designed to do… in the 1960s. The problem? We never updated it. Until we redesign it for today’s realities, no amount of finger-pointing will fix it. #alberta

If healthcare isn’t “free”… who pays? 💰Raising taxes? Off the table in Alberta. 🏥Private funding? Doesn't fit our culture. We’re at a crossroad: if we won’t pay for healthcare, we won’t get the care we need. If not taxes, then what? #Healthcare #RuralMedicine #FutureOfMedicine

Medical tourism is happening. Dollars leave with patients. The opportunity? Build areas of excellence here: surgical centers in Drumheller, diagnostic hubs in Canmore, rural services attracting patients nationwide. Will Alberta keep sitting in the penalty box - or lead?

We talk about healthcare like it’s only provincial. But municipalities matter too. Towns that invest in housing, support groups & physician families thrive. Those that don’t? Clinics close, positions stay empty, residents drive hours for care. Healthcare is a partnership.

The future of medical training is longitudinal. Why? Because disconnected, block-based learning is outdated - and it’s holding students back. Longitudinal learning prepares stronger doctors, healthier communities, and better medicine. #MedEd #RuralMedicine #UCLIC

“Why can’t we just copy another country’s healthcare model?” Because culture. ➡️ Alberta’s clinics = small businesses (publicly funded, privately delivered) ➡️ Revenue = taxes - but Albertans resist higher taxes ➡️ Private models collapse without cultural alignment

Burnout. It’s a loaded word. But for physicians, here’s the uncomfortable question: Is it burnout - or the reality we signed up for? Medicine has always meant long hours, pressure, responsibility. That’s the calling. So where’s the line between a tough job & genuine burnout?

I wish physicians could leave reviews too. Patients can rate us online. But we can’t share context. ➡️Demands for inappropriate care ➡️Refusing treatment, then blame us ➡️Reviews rooted in system failures, not individuals Respect is a two-way street. Without it, clinics close.

There’s a quiet form of discrimination in healthcare we don’t talk about enough: ageism. Too often, care is rationed by numbers, not need. “You’re too old for screening.” “You’re too young for this test.” On paper, it looks efficient. In practice, it denies care.

If I could change 3 things in Alberta’s healthcare system tomorrow: 1️⃣Build systems that don’t rely on endless people power. 2️⃣Stop pretending one model fits everywhere. 3️⃣Make communication seamless. These aren’t abstract ideals. They’re practical, urgent changes we need now.

Where healthcare meets homework! One of the advantages of being both rural generalists and clinic owners is flexibility. When something unexpected happens, we pivot - quickly. So this week, our clinic is also a classroom! Adaptability isn’t just a skill. It’s a way of life.

Prevention isn’t just something I talk about - it’s something I practice. As a physician - but more importantly, as a patient - I know how critical prevention really is. The best way to protect our health system - and ourselves - is to catch problems before they become crises.

Healthcare in Alberta runs on one revenue stream: taxes. But Albertans don’t want higher taxes. Clinics (small businesses) need to survive. Private models don’t fit our culture. So if we won’t raise taxes - and we won’t accept other models - what happens when the money runs out?

Everyone’s talking about "team-based care" like it’s new. Out here in rural Alberta it’s just called Tuesday. It’s the new buzzword - the “wave of the future” - everyone’s talking about. But rural medicine has been doing this since the beginning of time. We had to. #Alberta

Thank you, Drumheller. This year’s Diwali celebration was our biggest yet - nearly 200 people came together to share food, laughter, light, and community. We’re so grateful for everyone who joined us and for the generous donations made to the Drumheller Food Bank.

I didn’t plan to open my own clinic. But in 9 weeks, I did. 1,000 patients signed up in the first month. Not because I wanted to go solo - but because the old model didn’t align with how I believe medicine should be practiced. Sometimes, you have to build what doesn’t yet exist.

Google Maps said this was the “fastest way” from Crowsnest Pass to Claresholm. Turns out, it was 30 km of gravel, random cows, and not another soul in sight. It wasn’t planned - just one of those moments that reminds you how much of Alberta you don’t see from the main road.
