This early medieval terminal depicts a lion. No, really. Lions in medieval art are famous for looking, well, not like lions (see #NotALion for more joy). They acted more as symbols rather than realistic animals. Here, it's possible that the lion represents the Evangelist St Mark.

He then goes on to describe the ‘Howard Carter row’ where Carter has been shut ‘out of T’s Tomb’ and that the whole ‘business is most unfortunate’ 3/3

On 27th Feb 1924, whilst in Luxor, Rider Haggard wrote in his diary “it is difficult to keep a diary in Egypt, except of the tourist sort, filled with details of expeditions” 1/3 #RiderHaggard1924

Unfortunately, his daughter Lilias fell ill on the trip “Lilias having been attacked with flu… I am thankful to say she seems much better today, but the doctor still keeps her in bed” 2/3

On 5th March 1924 H Rider Haggard wrote in his diary: “Mena House Hotel - Lilias being well enough again, we left Luxor and arrived here Monday Morning” #RiderHaggard1924 1/3

After complaining of the awful traffic noise and ‘motor screeches’ he wrote “At least I find it so to sit in my room at the top of the house, as I am doing at this moment, watch the mighty mass of the great pyramid gradually devoured of the night” 2/3
