How should Christians respond to migrants? Well, the Church’s job is to care for desperate and hurting people. Jesus doesn’t check IDs before deciding to care. The government’s role is to set border policy. Let’s let the Church be the Church and the government be the government.

ICE agents were hanging out at local schools to grab parents when they came to pickup their kids. Within an hour our community organized to meet the at-risk kids and get them home safely. We can secure the border and manage immigration without being cruel.

Let’s stop pretending Jesus was a culture warrior. He wasn’t campaigning to “take the nation back for God.” He wasn’t building a voting bloc or establishing a “moral majority.” If He wanted political power, He would’ve run for office. Instead, He let Rome kill Him. The mission

Jesus taught that a lack of concern for the poor is not a minor lapse, but reveals that something is seriously wrong with one’s spiritual compass, the heart.

The only question on the ‘final exam’ is ‘What did you do to help the people at the bottom of the social and economic ladder?’

We are all spiritual refugees who have fled from God and broken His laws. And yet he chose not to punish us but instead to welcome us, to love us and to forgive us. This is the heart of the gospel - a gospel that forgives, restores and embraces the downtrodden.

To those who want America to be a Christian nation-some advice: STOP spewing anger and judgment, stop weaponizing politics. And START helping the poor, welcoming the stranger, serving others and acting with compassion, empathy and integrity. In other words-act more like Jesus.

Christians are to be the fragrance of Christ in our culture. Our fragrance can be one of judgment or love, compassion or cruelty, grace or anger, humility or self-righteousness, peace or conflict. What fragrance have you chosen?

Consider this: All the countries of Europe combined average about 3-4 mass shootings per year. The US has had 341 so far this year-more than one a day. Are we more violent? More mental illness? Or is it because our laws don’t protect us?

Many things can become idols in our lives, money, success, beauty, etc. Politics as well. What happens when our politics become an idol? This, from Tim Keller: “In the end idols can make it possible to call evil good and good evil.” This is happening right now in the Church.

The problem of migration is political but also ethical. How should we think about or treat these migrants? When I someday stand before God, I would rather be found guilty of caring too much than judging too much. “I was a stranger and you welcomed me.”

What the Bible doesn’t say: “The fruit of the Spirit is anger, judgement, division, arrogance, insult, scorn, coarseness, cynicism and cruelty.

“The only thing that counts is faith expressing itself through love.” Gal 5:6 Note that our faith must express itself through love-not anger, judgment or division.

“For the entire law is fulfilled in keeping this one command: “Love your neighbor as yourself.” If you bite and devour each other, watch out or you will be destroyed by each other.” Gal 5:14-15

In light of our angry politics: “The acts of the flesh are obvious: …… hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions and envy … I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God.” Gal 5
