Mayor Adams' actions don't match his words. ➡️use our easy tool to tell him he must stop jailing people who need treatment, and #GetRikersClosed: bit.ly/closerikers-ac… #CloseRikers #Decarcerate #Divest #Redistribute #EndNYCDeathPenalty #CareNotCriminalization

"Punitive segregation, enhanced restraint, it’s all bureaucratic euphemisms that are talking about essentially the same thing: solitary confinement." - Our Founding Facilitator John Proctor #CloseRikers gothamist.com/news/new-yorke…

#LRT When I worked at Rikers in the adolescent unit (guys ages 15-19), a disproportionate % were there for "jumping turnstiles." Then, once arrested, they often couldn't make bail (as low as $300). So yeah, arresting ppl for "fare beating" is a made up crime that serves elites.

NEW: "Our beloved Erick Tavira died in solitary confinement on Rikers in Oct. 2022. Erick had dreams like everyone else. He liked writing, liked to sing. He had mental health needs & needed treatment, not jail and not solitary. Solitary needs to end now." nydailynews.com/2024/01/05/new…

"Create a space and a place where people who make mistakes, get in trouble, have mental illness can heal and get healthy, not be abused and die. It shouldn't be a place where people go to die." R/C writer Marvin Wade on the need to #CloseRikers bronx.news12.com/activists-call…

The story of the #ExoneratedFive should remind New York Daily News (and everyone) of what can happen when police rush to make arrests in a high-profile case, and why due process matters.

Re/Creation Sharing my soul brother John Proctor's words about our dear Mike C.: "He was a thinker whose mind somehow traversed the stars on the subway train, he was a connector of people whom every person I know who met him loved as a brother."

"If our city adequately invests in housing, mental health, employment programs, youth development...we can decarcerate while building safer communities. All Eric Adams needs to do is listen to the communities of color he claims to represent." #CloseRikers

BREAKING: Today we're launching our new fight for judicial accountability, with a new focus — trial court judges. Judges who have shown themselves to be cruel and excessive should not be rubber-stamped to new terms. It’s time to replace one of the worst judges in New York. 🧵

This week marks Freedom Agenda's 4-year anniversary as a member-led project organizing people and communities directly impacted by incarceration. Here's to building power and putting in the work to #decarcerate, #divest & #redistribute, protect our people inside, and #CLOSERIKERS

Thank you Christopher Robbins Hell Gate *subscribe today!* This is the question every reporter should be asking Eric Adams. He's spent years pushing for more pretrial detention. Why shouldn't the presumption of innocence also apply to the thousands accused but not convicted at Rikers? #CloseRikers
