Unpopular but needed corrective: claims about Queen Charlotte’s “Black” ancestry are unsubstantiated by the historical record & based on dubious reading of 18thc-portraiture, a couple of cherry-picked primary sources, & inaccurate understandings of “moor” as a racial identity.

Interesting archive find of the day. Manuel Carrillo complaining on behalf of the gov. of Angola (1607) that 'negros de la india' (mazambiques, malucos) we're being illegally imported via the Acapulco trade. Interesting evidence for East African and Indian Ocean routes to Mexico.

If SCOTUS was serious about their ludicrous “colorblindness” claims, they would have abolished legacy admissions, aka affirmative action for the privileged. 70% of Harvard’s legacy applicants are white. SCOTUS didn’t touch that - which would have impacted them and their patrons.

I was accepted to Stanford 100% bc of affirmative action. A 15 yo rez girl living w kids from royal families & trust funds. When I worked for Stanford Admissions, I had to answer does Stanford practice aff action? My response was always yes bc the playing field isn’t level! 1/

Justice Alito accepted tens of thousands of dollars in lavish vacation gifts from a billionaire who lobbied to cancel the student loan forgiveness. After the gifts, Alito voted to overturn. This SCOTUS’ corruption undercuts its own legitimacy by putting its rulings up for sale.

I find it amusing that such a simple recipe that’s a Spanish breakfast / merienda staple needs to be promoted by a top British chef. But I only discovered this in my mid20s.

Nancy E. van Deusen's article sheds light on the range of rationales, conditions, legal channels, and procedures used by Spaniards to authorize the enslavement of targeted Indigenous groups even after it was supposedly outlawed in 1542 bit.ly/448341e
