VADM Gerald Bogan had a reputation for being tough and pugnacious. When he was captain of USS Saratoga during WWII, he got drunk in a club in New Caledonia and dared anyone in the place to fight him. A gunner's mate accepted the challenge and clobbered Bogan, knocking him out.
