Catching up on the dhh / Shopify / Ruby Central drama. Damn every language community has some drama, but ruby seems to have 24 X 7 drama ongoing

saw a BYD car on the streets of Madras. Beautiful car. If the Indian government weren't imposing 100% import tax (!) on these, we'd have a lot more. Tesla wouldn't stand a chance. (probaby doesn't any way)

Dwarkesh Patel's interview with Dr Richard Sutton is titled "Richard Sutton – Father of RL thinks LLMs are a dead end" Emperor. Clothes. old story, but endlessly re cycled in tech.

I don't think anyone who can actually launch and operate space hardware has solicited the Royal Society for their opinion, and if this report doesn't spent 95% of its ink unpacking the implications of that fact, then why read the rest? Let's make this really clear. You can have

We just don't know how to do simple things anymore. Collectively as an industry. So much of this BS is internalised and assumed to be the default case. Probably why LLMs like Claude default to over engineered solutions too TBH.

Paraphrasing Casey Muratori: Being older, I don't have to worry about job prospects in ten years, I don't care about AI generating code because I like programming, and I don't want something to do it for me. If AI gets really good at coding, then OK, coding is now my hobby.

"i *want* to do the programming" - Case Muratori also, very valid points about the dubious legality of LLM generated code. From an interesting interview at youtube.com/watch?v=gZ2V5V…

The reason it is so important for everyone to keep pretending that AGI is definitely right around the corner is that there is now over $1T of investment riding on this belief (either already expended, or committed) Current (and recent past) capex cannot be justified by current

?via HN) "Once AGI is declared by OpenAI, that declaration will now be verified by an independent expert panel." Wow the hubris. Who tf is Open ai to "declare AGI"? Bad enough that "AI" has become synonymous with llms!

Zerodha's $100k donation to FFmpeg, while by their own admission not using it that much, makes it even more generous. Companies with businesses depending on FFmpeg should (but probably won't) learn from such generosity.

When I started working in python, I got lazy with “single assignment”, and I need to nudge myself about it. You should strive to never reassign or update a variable outside of true iterative calculations in loops. Having all the intermediate calculations still available is

Crazy bit of UofT trivia I just found: Ilya Sutskever and the mathematician Jacob Tsimmerman (who solved the Andre-Oort conjecture) were both in the same grad differential topology class in 2005 as undergrads (labeled 37 and 25 respectively)
