the first day of class was today, which marks the start of my third year at UCSD! this year we also held a "meet the professors" event for students in our first-year first-quarter data science course (dsc10.com) and over 100 students showed up! 🍕

in a new project we developed for DSC 10 (Halıcıoğlu Data Science Institute), one of the parts has students build a Taylor Swift song recommender after, they get to interact with this widget, which allows them to choose a song from a menu and plays the most similar TS songs directly in the notebook!

as destructive as AI has been in education, it's also been instrumental in helping me create course materials quickly. what used to take hours now takes minutes! I regularly use claude + windsurf to write plotly code and to create and edit SVG diagrams. can't imagine going back
