If you want to understand some of the ways that private equity-owned companies are pushing up the cost of housing, here's a good example. Today, U.S. Department of Justice and several states sued RealPage for its algorithmic collusion scheme to drive up rents. bloomberg.com/news/articles/…

I highly recommend this piece by Ben Recht and maybe: leif weatherby on Nate Silver's most recent book. It's a smart critique of Bayesian technocracy being falsely hardwired into the human species. The Point Magazine thepointmag.com/politics/the-b…

Being "pro AI regulation" does not require supporting every bill. 🫤 We should be striving to draft and pass the right rules, not just any rules.

To perhaps be more specific here - critiquing SB 1047 (or any proposed AI bill) definitely does not make anyone "anti-regulation". There are a lot of kinks to work out with that particular bill - it's part of the political process to work through people's legitimate concerns.

Great to see some more work brewing on investigating the failures of automated content moderation in low resource languages. I was grateful to learn a lot from Hellina Hailu Nigatu about this last year: dl.acm.org/doi/abs/10.114… Such a serious & overlooked issue!

Beyond excited to share that this is now out in nature! We show that despite efforts to remove overt racial bias, LLMs generate covertly racist decisions about people based on their dialect. Joint work with amazing co-authors ria / pratyusha ria kalluri, Dan Jurafsky, and Sharese King.

Relatedly, those eager to work on "AI & law" tend to focus on extensions of the closest "tech law" topic (copyright/IP, privacy, etc). IMO there's so much more of the legal landscape impacted by AI to explore (env law, labor, admin law, discrimination, product liability, etc)!

Great opportunity for AI and governance experts. AI office role, deadline on September 6. You need to be a EU citizen, but the role is in SF. …ternational-partnerships.ec.europa.eu/jobs/policy-of…

ICYMI several "AI innovation" bills (as espoused in the Senate AI forum report) very recently passed through the Senate Commerce Committee. Glad to see many focused explicitly on resourcing accountability infrastructure - audits, testing, standards, etc: mintz.com/insights-cente…

Fwiw I think these AI funding bills are the most likely to pass at the federal level in the US. Definitely worth the effort to actively shape how we commit our public resources in the AI space.

Fwiw I'm convinced there does exist a path towards policymaking that prioritizes safety, without compromising openness. Was very impressed by Jon's work here to bring together key stakeholders with *very* different views on the topic and identify opportunities for consensus.
