My parents got me the Red Cliff flag when I started Macalester College, and today I taught my last classes as an assistant professor. In my Native American Activism class — my official last class — one of my students said she knew my ancestors were proud of me. Here’s to sabbatical!

"I love you" is the last thing I say to my kids before we get to school. If they don't say it back right away, I repeat it until they do. They think I'm just being funny, but I do it because, if something happens to them at school, it's the last thing we hear each other say.

So my undergraduate research assistant, who's currently looking at archival materials from the 1980s-1990s, recently said something to the effect of "You know, I was born in 2002 -- all of this is so new to me!" And then I crumbled into dust.

Some time this summer our kids started calling us "Mom" and "Dad" instead of "Mama" and "Daddy," and nothing really prepares you for that.

I knew we’d moved to the country, but it didn’t really sink in until a neighbor offered cucumbers, zucchini, and eggs to the neighborhood and I picked up a zucchini when I dropped off an old watermelon as a treat for her chickens.

Some days I sit in front of my computer all day. Other days I get to spend time on Lake Superior with Regular Sized Rita (and other awesome folks) for an upcoming project with Minnesota Historical Society — and those days are the best days! Chi miigwech!

My lifelong love for theatre runs about as deep as my love for history, so to have my book win an award from TheatreLibAssn for an exemplary work in the field of live theater or performance feels pretty spectacular. Miigwech, as always, to UNC Press and @MarkSV!
