Major Doug Riniker and SRO/Deputy Kellie Hughes participated in a School Threats Forum held CPU Schools on Wednesday evening. The discussion was centered around planning, prevention & response to school threats & also addressed mental health resources available in the community.

Deputy Hughes attended the annual Iowa Child Passenger Safety (CPS) Tech Update today at the Prairie Meadows Events and Conference Center. Linn County also won the CPS Jeopardy game. Awesome job!

Through a collaborative effort, which started in June 2019, Emily Parker from ASAC & Deputy/SRO Hughes have been providing ESD (electronic smoking devices) prevention curriculum to staff at all five school districts in rural Linn County.

LCSO K9s Gucci and Bingo, along with Benton Co. K9 Bullet, were at CPU Schools & Springville CSD today for K9 sniffs. This was a routine check and part of the K9s training.

Deputy/SRO Hughes has been training CPU Schools HS health classes and staff in all four buildings on Stop the Bleed, which is a national campaign. Through grants & assistance from Linn County Public Health, Stop the Bleed kits have been donated to the school and placed with the AEDs.

It's still winter, but our deputies are preparing for the weather hazards that warmer weather can bring by attending Storm Spotter training provided by our good friends at Linn County Iowa Emergency Management.

McGruff spent the day with Deputy/SRO Hughes at CPU Schools teaching kindergartners & 1st graders about police officers and 2nd graders about the 4 safety rules when finding a gun: 1) Stop 2) Don't Touch 3) Run Away 4) Tell a Grownup

SRO/Deputy Kellie Hughes is ever-prepared and always smiling (as you can tell even when she's wearing her face mask) as CPU Schools was the first Linn County school district to start classes today. Let's do this and make this a safe school year!

Congratulations to Deputy Kellie Hughes on her retirement! Kellie worked for the Sheriff's Office for 24 years, notably serving as a paramedic on Rescue 57 and most recently serving as our School Resource Deputy.

As part of School Resource Deputy Hughes' retirement, she handed over the keys and her school duties to our new School Resource Deputy, Omar. Our School Resource Deputy works with the Alburnett, Center Point, Central City, North Linn, and Springville schools.
