I’ve always found this perverse and do so now more than ever. Driving large and fast lumps of metal that can kill people is a privilege that you have to earn legally. If you use it to kill someone you should lose your privilege for life. It really should be as simple as that.

Britain has a cost-free way to make its streets safer: don't renew the licences of people who kill by dangerous driving. But inexplicably, we don't do it! Of the 202 people convicted of causing death by dangerous driving in 2023/24, just 2 were handed a lifetime driving ban.

It's often said that the lack of prison space is one reason our criminal justice system is so lenient. Then what accounts for how forgiving we are of dangerous drivers who kill people and are let back on the roads shortly after?

It really is mad how we increasingly treat driving like it’s a human right. So what if you depend on driving for your work? Maybe don’t be utterly, selfishly reckless and kill people then!

It seems crazy that people who kill multiple times with their cars are allowed to ever drive again.

When my friend was killed in a hit and run I had no interest in the killer going to prison. Just adds to the tragedy. But he had already been banned for drink driving and I think his licence was only taken away for a few years. He's probably driving again

The areas where Britain is failing the worst today are all ones where parliament has outsourced control, either explicitly or through vague legal drafting, to bodies that face no feedback loop encouraging good performance at all. Only restoring the constitution can fix this.

Around 425 years ago, Hugh MacDonald of Skye treacherously murdered eight MacVicar brothers in an attempt to take their land. Their sister wrote a poem lamenting her brothers and venting her hatred for Hugh. Here is one verse:

This is precisely the kind of person who should be banned from driving for life, as per our recent Onward report - Cleared to Kill. Instead, she will be free to kill again.
