I stopped going on my evening walk when the dogs got too feeble to come with me. Now they’ve gone I’ve started doing it alone and it’s a fine walk but without dogs it’s not the same. I guess before long I will have to go and see a man about a dog.

My seven-year-old asked for a dictionary this week. We went to the bookshop today to buy one. She walked home hugging it, pausing every so often to look up a word, grinning as though she had been given a book of spells, the key to wonders.
