Had a great time at PHPAmersfoort and Close geeking out with the developers about software complexity and productive ways of building on existing code. As promised I'll share some tools of the trade and remember: the best tool is the one you know how to use.

My number one: the debugging ux of PhpStorm, a JetBrains IDE. Just use plain PHP for conditional breakpoints, then evaluate a bit of code in that execution context. It is a great sandbox for exploratory coding, too. It has been a invaluable in helping me understand the @phpunit internals.

If you do a lot of @phpunit testing give the human-readable --testdox output format a try. Clean and colorful it makes sifting through test logs a lot easier.
