Half way on our journey to the High Arctic for research fieldwork and this is the forecast for the next few days. And here is the first glimpse of a very warm Svalbard as we begin our descent into Longyearbyen. Rifle hire to sort tomorrow (for polar bear protection) and then into the field proper.....in 18 degrees of heat!!! University of Hertfordshire Geography, Environment & Planning at Herts

A mere 17 degrees in the High Arctic today 🥵 Monitoring methane (a potent greenhouse gas) emerging from thawing permafrost-visible where there is water, as bubbles and 'belches' of escaping methane can readily be seen Geography, Environment & Planning at Herts University of Hertfordshire

Down to 'only' 14 degrees in the High Arctic today 🥵🥵working on a glacier called Longyearbreen today, a location we also take our final year students on our High Arctic fieldcourse to provide training in Arctic fieldwork skills Geography, Environment & Planning at Herts University of Hertfordshire

Methane monitoring today-potent greenhouse gas bubbling up from thawing permafrost. We are testing an economical method of measuring methane using a sensor designed & built by our amazing technician, Aiden Bygrave Aiden Bygrave Geography, Environment & Planning at Herts akshay kumar
