The interest in elevated remnant cholesterol as a direct cause of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease had a slow start; however, interest has increased enourmously recently among scientists and pharma companies. The term was first used in 2007 in a JAMA paper. Stay tuned!

Elevated remnant cholesterol remains a likely cause of ASCVD in diabetes. Remnant cholesterol-lowering therapies should also lower apoB levels to reduce risk of ASCVD: rdcu.be/dVQJg Risk of ASCVD in diabetes in the Copenhagen General Population Study:

In impaired renal function on statins, elevated remnant cholesterol (but not LDL-C) explains most residual risk of ASCVD: ahajournals.org/doi/full/10.11… Such patients are identifiable through higher non-HDL cholesterol or apoB levels. Without statins, elevated LDL-C also matter

Check out our collaborative work on GPNMB in cardiac repair with Arjun Debb and Jake Lusis UCLA. Together we identified GPNMB as the first protein ligand for orphan receptor GPR39 and uncovered its involvement in post myocardial repair of the heart. go.nature.com/40kBJKS
