Very excited to be heading this brand new institute! (Not pictured two core members from our statistics and data science department, Cosma Shalizi and Nynke Niezink)

Very excited to be presenting on collective intelligence and AI in science at this *very* cool The Philosophy of Contemporary and Future Science Cambridge HPS and Cambridge Philosophy event. You should register... this lineup đź‘€

🤔What's the role of co-location in scientific discovery? The usual measures underestimate it! 🚨New paper by Eamon Duede Eduede eduede.bsky.social (with James Evans @klakhani and me) Open access: sciencedirect.com/science/articl… (1/3)

Universities are important, not just because they generate knowledge, but how they do! Our new piece with James Evans Misha Teplitskiy @ ICSSI @klakhani out of Knowledge Lab and Digital Data Design Institute at Harvard shows that universities mix diverse perspectives & it is *these* mixtures that are most influential!

People discourage rhetorical citations (cite to support the author's claim), and believe if all citations came from those that truly inspired authors (substantive), the community would be better. Is that true? In a new Nature Communications paper with Misha Teplitskiy | Science of Science, we test it (1/n):

How does language shape our ideas, conversations, and collaborations? New work with the amazing Pedro ('Pete') Aceves Johns Hopkins Carey Business School discovers how human languages vary widely in how densely they encode meaning and its striking consequences for communication and collaboration!

Two professional updates: I'm excited to join Carnegie Mellon University as an asst prof later in 24. I'm also honored to be selected as a Schmidt Futures AI2050 Early Career Fellow, alongside an exceptional cohort; commencing my fellowship after starting at CMU! schmidtsciences.org/ai2050-early-c…

Excited to be starting at WashU in Fall 2024! Grateful to everyone who has written letters and offered advice and mentorship during my five years on the market, e.g. Liam Bright, Tania Lombrozo, Experimental Philosophy Jonathan Birch and others not on twitter. philosophy.wustl.edu/news/david-kin…

Excited about this paper I did with Eduede eduede.bsky.social + 2 McGill students, accepted at #acl2024 main conf, where we offer a counter-intuitive defense of AI hallucinations based on narrative theory. This is a CS paper but has implications for literary theory. >>> arxiv.org/abs/2406.04175

An exciting opportunity Argonne National Lab: the Margaret Butler postdoctoral Fellowship in Computational Science. You will work with brilliant colleagues on an exascale computer. Applications are due August 1, 2024. See alcf.anl.gov/margaret-butle…

I'm seeking a postdoc to work with me at Purdue & Argonne National Lab! AI & science, philosophy of AI, automation in math/science, or philosophy of math. Philosophy appt. but not particular about disciplinary background! pls RT widely. DM me w/ questions! higheredjobs.com/faculty/detail…
