After all these years, finally discovered why we train to navigate like it was the 1940s. Had a complete HSI (GPS navigation system) failure in flight and had to revert to VOR radio navigation. Easy flight home ...

Went to my first museum in over a year (Philadelphia Museum of Art, socially distanced and by appointment), and it was glorious. Netflix was ok for a while, but it is not a suitable replacement for a real life ...

So #pennstate is going with the honor policy for students masking in class. I have 320 students in my CMPSC311 course this semester, which means if even 1% of students are unvaccinated & unmasked , I and the other students will be put in danger 153 times over 16 weeks.

Delighted to announce that my advisee, Eric Pauley, has been awarded the Outstanding Graduate Student Research Award at UW–Madison CS! This honor is given to just one graduate student each year, and it’s difficult to think of someone more deserving.

Patrick McDaniel (@pdmcdan) 's Twitter Profile Photo

Eric’s research takes a principled approach to the security of cloud and software systems, led by the key insight that securing these platforms is fundamentally a data problem: by developing new vantage points on attacker behavior, we can better defend against attacks.

Patrick McDaniel (@pdmcdan) 's Twitter Profile Photo

Eric’s work has not only advanced the science of security measurement, but has led to real-world security improvements for some of the most critical infrastructures backing modern computation. The practical impact of Eric’s work truly exemplifies the Wisconsin Idea.

Eric’s work has been highly collaborative, but I would be remiss if I give a shout out to Paul Barford in particular. Working with Paul has been one of the highlights of our move to Madison, and his insights and mentorship have been instrumental in Eric’s work.

Please join me in congratulating Eric for this remarkable accomplishment! Eric will be on the job market for tenure-track faculty positions this fall (2024).
