Taken in June of 1958, this #NYTMCollection photo shows Baltimore & Ohio Railroad (B&O)/Staten Island Railway car 368 on the “Wash Track” at the North Ramp in Saint George, Staten Island. Opened in July of 1860, the SIRR began a partnership with the B&O in 1880.

These photos by Sam Hollenshead show construction workers rebuilding a damaged section of the 1/9 train line in Lower Manhattan after the September 11 terrorist attacks. Amazingly, the last beam was put in place in July 2002, only five months after construction began.

On Halloween night 1920. Kevin Barry prepared for execution the next morning, with support from his college friends. 'The boys from the college were up outside the gate and they said the Rosary. They also sang the Soldier’s Song, which did me more good than you can imagine.'

#OnThisDay 1949 At midnight twenty-six counties of Ireland officially left the British Commonwealth and became a republic on the 18th. Crowds packed on to O'Connell Street bridge to see a 21 gun salute. It was 3 minutes late due to the massive crowds. #Ireland #History
