The backlash about the RFU waistline tackle law was to be expected, and clearly fuelled by the feeling it’s an unjustified attack on a game played and loved by many. But through the red mist we mustn’t lose sight of those suffering like this amateur yesterday (with permission).

To clarify. Again. OUR community game welfare proposals recommend ‘ARMPIT’ as maximum tackle height. Lowers contact area from head but gives players realistic option in the dynamic tackle situation. And can be applied game-wide. Community proposals: bit.ly/3HpTajg

Ten years ago Dylan Hartley got 11 weeks for verbally abusing the referee and missed a Lions tour. Johnny Sexton, guilty on all 3 counts of being ‘confrontational, aggressive, disrespectful and hostile’ to all 3 match officials, gets off with 3 matches. Lucky, lucky, lucky.

Am hearing that Jersey’s players woke to a text message from the club, sent at 5.30am telling them to come down to the club for a 7.30am meeting which is when the bad news was delivered. Players and staff must be broken that it’s come to this.
