Increasing polarization means losing the ability to judge any complex issue on the merits. Fear of having the "wrong politics" obscures reality. So many carefully calibrating beliefs to what they think they're supposed to say or who they're supposed to hate.

Something very satisfying about refactoring a bunch of code and then, like magic, other parts that you never touched just start working again. Multiple hours of "I suck at this, I shouldn't be a programmer" and then all at once "aha! I'm a genius! It's WORKING!"
