Exploring with students Cicero's aim for rhetoric: "To teach, to move, to delight."

Learning with my Rhetoric students that the study of Rhetoric is a life-long pursuit. A good speech is not made in an hour or two. To quote Douglas Wilson: "You must prepare the speaker before the speech" – and this is an arduous task.

Anyone know where/how the idea of copiousness originated in Rhetoric? After careful study with my students, we agreed we would go on a diet of excerpts from the best speeches ever written. “Read and re-read until their words become ours” has become our mantra.
