Firearms are being used more and more across Illinois. This shift isn’t just a number—it’s a reflection of the failures to interrupt cycles of harm before they escalate. We need prevention, accountability and support for affected communities. Read more: vpc.org/wp-content/upl…

Our work with the Illinois Peace Project reminds us that community safety isn’t one rally or one moment—it’s daily work rooted in connection and care. All month long, we joined with partners across Chicago to build spaces of joy, action and healing.

The reality is that when a Black person is killed in Chicago, police are much less likely to make an arrest. From 2010–2024, just over 21% of fatal shootings of Black victims were cleared by arrest—compared to nearly 38% of white victims. Justice shouldn’t depend on race.

As we celebrated a victory for gun safety in Illinois yesterday, Manhattan suffered a tragic mass shooting. It’s a painful reminder our fight isn’t over. We stand with communities devastated by gun violence and remain committed to building a future free from it.

For over a decade, guns have taken more lives in Illinois than car crashes. We invested in traffic safety—but not in preventing gun violence. It’s time to treat it like the public health crisis it is—with data, resources and the will to act. Full report: vpc.org/wp-content/upl…

Gun violence doesn’t affect everyone equally. Our latest report shows how racial disparities remain at the heart of this crisis. If we want to end gun violence, we must confront its root causes including systemic racism and disinvestment.

Black Illinoisans are being killed at the highest rates in the US. This stems from decades of disinvestment, structural racism and political neglect. We must address the root causes and invest in real solutions: prevention, healing and policy that centers those most impacted.

Gun violence is down in Chicago this year. And it’s not an accident, it’s the result of investment in community violence intervention. When we fund trusted messengers, trauma care and frontline response, we prevent violence before it starts. CVI works – it’s that simple.
