Yes. Syria’s starting conditions for a post-authoritarian transition are extremely poor. Its leaders need to get ahead of 4 key security challenges immediately: 1) Securing the Central Bank & any other buildings that might be looted 2) Establishing monopoly over use of force

An interesting background piece written in #Arabic by Hosam Jazmati for all wondering who the father of #AlSharaa (Hussein Ali al-Sharaa) is. Is he also related to former foreign minister of #Syria Farouk al-Sharaa? aljumhuriya.net/ar/2024/09/10/سيرة-والد-الجولاني-بقلمه/

Reading today: One of my close readings today where I followed the trail of almost every single footnote. Great overview by prof Hafiz Zakariya on Britain’s Islampolitik in the Malay world. Can be read here: researchgate.net/publication/33…

Yesterday I attended this fascinating talk by Mezna Qato at the World Histpry Research Seminar at Gonville & Caius College. A meticulous global microhistory of possibilities and limitations of Palestinian education in Jordanian-annexed West Bank, deeply researched and felt! Thanks, Mezna!

I wrote a short tribute for on the importance of Ghee’s scholarship on Muslim contribution to Britains war effort in WW2. There is much more to be said, I hope others who knew him better will come forward to share their reflections. My condolences to his family and loved ones.
