Inspiring words from Gemma Harper @JNCC_UKCEO to kick-off the #SeabirdsCount End of Project conference… there are winners and losers, we to inspire hope and use our effective tools to conserve our internationally important #seabird populations A quick 🧵 1/x #ornithology

With most of our ringing sites currently underwater, we've started the year targeting the linnet flock in one of the few dry(ish) fields in Oxford. 49 ringed over two afternoons is a promising start, given we ringed 46 total in 2023!

Very honoured to receive this award from ASAB for our paper on how collective decision-making processes impact upon learning in groups!!! Thank you very much to ASAB, to my coauthors, and to the Oxford BBSRC DTP for funding this research!

The extensive flooding has created some temporary opportunities to catch waders at our ringing sites. This jack snipe was one of two ringed on a small pool where snipe and golden plover were flying in after dark to feed Thames Valley Environmental Records Centre Trust for Oxfordshire's Environment

It was great to be able to get out while the weather was so nice last week, and confirm wintering Cetti's warbler at one of our sites ☀️ Looking forward to the next opportunity to continue monitoring, when it's a bit less wet and windy!

Balearic Shearwaters show surprising flexibility to adapt to climate change A new study has shown that individual birds were shifting their range northwards by an average of 25km per year rarebirdalert.co.uk/v2/Content/Bal…

Lovely evening celebrating 70 years of Copeland Bird Observatory last night. Really interesting to hear from Ollie Padget about some of the Manx shearwater research happening on Copeland and how historical ringing data can be used. Here’s to the next 70 years! 🎉

Check out our new paper “Night flight facilitates late breeding catch-up in a long-distance migratory seabird” We found that late laying shearwaters were more likely to fly more at night during migration and stopover less to “catch up” time nature.com/articles/s4159…
