I'm at Old Cathedral NYC, the second cathedral in the original 13 colonies in 1808. "Cathedral" comes from the Greek word "cathedra" which means chair. The cathedral is where the bishop's chair is. Tune in later this week for more on the Basilica of St. Patrick's Old Cathedral.
"This cathedral has welcomed God's people for over two centuries." We're delighted to welcome Cardinal Dolan as he begins his walking tour at New York's original cathedral.

We're inside the Old Cathedral NYC today. In 2010, I asked Pope Benedict that he designate this a basilica. A basilica is a church or cathedral granted special privileges by the pope.
Did you know Old Cathedral NYC was the largest indoor space in New York state when it was built? It's had many famous Catholics step through its doors. Make sure you stop by if you're ever in New York
