To understand the brain, we must understand its parts — the cells. In a paper out today in Nature Neuroscience, our scientists & collaborators propose the adoption of a transcriptome-based taxonomy of cell types for mammalian neocortex. #TeamScience #OpenScience nature.com/articles/s4159…

1) Three years ago I saw a fascinating talk by Nicola Palomero-Gallagher about the patterns of receptors across the brain. I spoke to her and the great Prof. Karl Zilles afterwards. That chat eventually led us to our new preprint with XJ Wang & team: biorxiv.org/content/10.110…

Not all actions potentials were created equal. Check this work on action potential features amongst neuronal types of the neocortex journals.physiology.org/doi/full/10.11…

Not all GABAergic interneurons were created equal. They don't have all the same morphology, molecular profile and function. PV+, SST+, and 5HT3a+ are the three major groups. A classic reading 👇 ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/P…

The prefrontal cortex is like a screen and the pyramidal cells like pixels turned on and off by spikes so we can play motion pictures in the mind. Mental representations emerge from ensembles codes.

Are interneurons monolithic entities across species? Not really. Fenna Kriegen and coworkers broke that dogma. Recommended read 👇nature.com/articles/s4158…

Not all cortical areas were created equal. The granular prefrontal cortex emerges in primates, gets an upgrade in apes becoming extreme in humans. Is this upgrade the engine of humans enhanced cognition? and the Achilles heel mental disease predates on? cell.com/current-biolog…

NeuroNex: The Fabric of Neocortex job alert. Postdoc with Goettingen Neuroanatomy doing patch clamp electrophysiology+3D neuronal reconstruction+single cell-RNAseq. Fantastic opportunity for motivated individuals that also want to reach across disciplines. Come meet our team. Re-Tweet bitte, please, SVP.

Interested in the prefrontal corridor dlPFC - A32 - A25 and how it may serve as a pathway for emotional regulation? Uber-interesting paper here from Boston University UAM Autónoma Madrid neuroanatomists. Much needed: pathways, layer and neuron type specificity. jneurosci.org/content/40/43/…

WM lesions #2: 1951 Chow, Bloom & Bloom reported that lesions of the PFC but not posterior association cortices in macaques produce deficits in delayed response tasks & hyperactivity. Inferior temporal lesions also produced some delay response deficit. journals.physiology.org/doi/abs/10.115….

How did neurons in prefrontal cortex evolve special firing properties, and how do single-neuron dynamics translate to the network level? Come work with us Western Centre for Brain and Mind and join an international NeuroNex team (nxwm.io) Yale Neuroscience New York University in #compneuro!
