For those coming to Navigating War and Violence tomorrow, the event will be hosted on the second floor of F Block on DCU's St Patrick's Campus in room F202. There are stairs and elevators just to the left of the main reception which will take you directly there.

Thank you to all who attended Navigating War and Violence at the weekend. We began with the opening address, given by Professor James Kelly DCU History & Geog

First up on Friday on the panel titled 'Economic Impact and Compensation' was Anna Devlin, Joe Rodgers and Maria Kane. They examined the use of boycotts during the revolution, looting during the Battle of Dublin, and the Irish White Cross in Belfast 1921-1928.

At the same time we had the panel 'The Irish and Conflicts Abroad'. There Samuel Gary Beckton examined the international contingents of the UVF, Michelle Moffat looked at the Irish during WW2, and George Legg discussed London's troubled legacy.

In Panel 2, Thomas Tormey examined the role of escalation in ending of the War of Independence, Conor Roddy detailed the liaison arrangements during the Anglo-Irish Truce, and Daniel Finn discussed an alternative Tet Offensive strategy by the IRA.

On Panel 3A, we had Cormac Keenan, Hayley Brabazon, and Richard McElligott, examining family dynamics with ill revolutionary combatants, impact of trauma on women during the War of Independence, and the life and afterlives of trauma.

On Panel 3B, Nadia Dobrianska examined the contested meanings of intercommunal violence in Belfast in 1922, Daniel Carey discussed the relationship between The Standard, Catholic teachings, and WW2, and Roseanna Doughty assessed British media's coverage of the troubles.

To end the first day of the conference, Fredrika Larsson gave a fascinating keynote examining republican and loyalist murals in Northern Ireland.

To begin the second day of the conference, Susan Byrne talked about the diaries of Eleanor Cobbe Corbally's, Susie Deedigan examined the experiences of violence in Belfast and Dublin in 1922 and 1972, and Josie Richardson discussed routines in the routineness of conflict.

At the same time we had a panel on 'Professions and Institutions' with Shane Browne, Erin Brereton, and Kevin Finnan. They examined the experiences of National Volunteers detained after the rising, and the legal and medical professions during the War of Independence.

On Panel 5 we had Billy Shortall looking at the use of art in the Irish Free State, Brian Hughes and Seán Gannon examined members of the RIC who remained in or returned to the Irish Free State, and Gregory Walls explored how people adjusted to post-war life and maintained peace.

On one of our final two panels we had John Dorney and Frank Fagan. John presented his new research on Irish Civil War fatalities, while Frank discussed the memory of the Culleens ambush.

On our other final panel we had Keira Gomez and Lynsey Black. Keira discussed the narratives of the Northern Ireland conflict ‘ceasefire babies’ inherited. Lynsey examined stories, silence, and identity in post conflict Northern Ireland and is the PI on the CONSPACE project.

And finally on Saturday, Anne Dolan gave our second Keynote, Histories in ‘the midst of blood’, where she discussed the peculiar dynamics of violence and that of the awkward witness. To wrap things up, Head of School DCU History & Geog William Murphy gave the closing address.

On behalf of the organisers, we want to thank all of our speakers, attendees, chairs, keynotes, and DCU History & Geog for supporting our conference. It was an absolute highlight of our PhD experience to have the pleasure of organising and hosting this event full of fascinating papers

It is with great sadness that we acknowledge the loss of our dear friend, Dr Joe Rodgers. Joe presented at the conference on looting during the Battle for Dublin. He will be so missed. “And in the end, the love you take is equal to the love you make”.
