Subaru admin portal hacked by security researcher. Could unlock and track cars with just a few bits of info about the car or owner.

I think crypto permanently damaged tech in weird ways. Just a huge influx of very uninteresting greedy retards, and when crypto went bust they rolled into AI, and now every AI founder I meet except for a handful seem like total dimwits. Fuck crypto, man

we wanted flying cars but instead we got insanely good code that knows exactly when you lose focus on the browser containing some HR training

i get the sense the people most bullish on vibe coding are people who have spent their careers talking to SWEs over 15-30min calls and haven’t quite grasped how many hundreds of daily decisions are hidden from them out of respect for time

My favorite pet example of this is the follow button architecture (you better read this because it’s an example of what we hide from you to save you time): Okay, it’s just a fucking button, you click on it and it inserts a row in the follows table and it changes color, right?

linux's "consistent network interface naming" is like, probably a good thing, or whatever, but every time i see "enp195s0f3u1u4u3", i wonder if i'm having a stroke

If you want to know more about how Google Flights works, airline tickets, and why it is super complicated to deal with all the constraints and the combinatorial combinations, I highly recommend this set of slides by Carl de Marcken, one of the co-founders of ITA software, which

Cosigned, and surprisingly effective with good writers in addition to ones who more obviously need the prompting. Writing an artifact attaches you to the structure of it while simultaneously subsuming you in the topic. The second is really good for good work; the first, less so.

Learned from Andy Pavlo (@andypavlo.bsky.social) that SQL uses the SELECT..FROM order b/c a user study showed it was less confusing than the other way around. Apparently this is considered a mistake now--queries compose better with the other order. User studies have value, but a cautionary tale here?

I wrote a post on how to connect with people (i.e., make friends) at CS conferences. These events can be intimidating so here's some suggestions on how to navigate them I'm late for #ICLR2025 #NAACL2025, but just in time for #AISTATS2025 and timely for #ICML2025 acceptances! 1/4

One of the core rules of the Unix philosophy is that each program should do one thing and do it well. For `find` that apparently means wiping out your whole folder if you get the order of arguments wrong.
