No one warned me how stressful the 24 hours before the Covid test to travel overseas are. This is excruciating. It’s 2 years of pent up emotion not seeing family that still has to be compartmentalised away. At least my Mormon training as a gay kid trained me for this: #TurnItOff!

After more than two years of waiting and 36 hours of travel, it finally hit me. I am here.

You know how you can mercilessly criticise your own family as much as you want but the second someone else does it you suddenly swing into total “oh hell no you did not just say that” defence mode? This is how I feel about Australia being overseas versus when I’m at home. 🙃

Ill say it again: I don’t know how I survived two years without laughing so hard I snort with my dad, gossiping entirely by eye contact with mum, annoying my little sister, and letting my big sister annoy me… but I did. And I’d rather die than have to try to survive it again.

It's been a minute but I'm still alive. A cancer diagnosis in the family has kept me elsewhere. Day by day. A happy update: I'm officially Australia's newest bogan--err, "permanent resident." Condolences to those who tried to heckle me out of the country the last few years.😘
