The National Osterbrock Leadership Program (NOLP) is founded on the conviction that the lifelong value of the PhD - to the recipient and to society - will be maximized if PhD candidates can learn basic principles of leadership and management in addition to research training

NOLP seeks to empower astro grad students to design and implement student-led programs and initiatives. Through these efforts, astro grad students learn invaluable leadership and management skills on the job while making an impact in their comminities

Come meet our fellows at #AAS241! We are hosting a splinter session where we will lead a discussion on two main questions: - How can astro depts empower grads to design/implement student-led programs? - How can we include formal leadership training in Astro PhD education?

Our splinter session at #AAS241 will be a roundtable discussion among researchers at all levels of astro: undergrad through tenured faculty. Everyone is welcome! Join the conversation by remembering “2”: Tuesday at 2pm in room 202!

Currently Astro PhD programs are really good at preparing students to be researchers. But are they also teaching career skills like leadership, team management, communication, etc? Join our splinter session #AAS241 to discuss more! Just remember “2”: Tuesday at 2pm in room 202

Each NOLP node operates a little differently, but all emphasize learning leadership skills through real world experience. At UCSC, grads apply for mini-grants to fund programs fully of their own design, including outreach programs.
