It is really important for the Oversight Board to hear from a wide range of experts in its cases. Glad to see ICJ ICJ - Asia and the Pacific welcome yesterday's Cambodia Prime Minister decision, after also taking the time to submit a public comment in the case: icj.org/cambodia-icj-w…

Importantly, this case works through the information we need to understand ML classification and human review at scale. There's always trade-offs. Understanding error rates and the distribution of who they impact is crucial. Great coverage:

Which rules should govern #contentmoderation? The arbitrary Lex Meta? US / EU law? Is international law sufficiently clear? This is the dilemma Dennis Redeker, Nicola Palladino, Kinfe Yilma and I investigate in our new book, fully available OA! 🤓👇 link.springer.com/book/10.1007/9…

How to address the impact of automated technologies on marginalized groups? Nicolas Suzor: Start by acknowledging that power matters and current data frequently perpetuate inequities. The burden shouldn’t be on the marginalized groups to point out these problems to the tech companies

Aiming for transparency and accountability, these approaches seem to partially rely on problematic assumptions, as Nicolas Suzor points out. Such assumptions are that a) falsehoods can be clearly dissected in unintentional mis- and intentional dis-information, #IGF2023

The Oversight Board has surprised skeptics, but there's room for improvement. Here's several ideas for OSB 2.0. 1) automatic appeals upon a "moderator split" 2) a "right to intervene" for users a la FRCP 24 3) a OSB clerkship program Send feedback! kevintfrazier.medium.com/version-2-0-of…

Today the Board overturned Meta’s decision to leave up a post that targeted transgender people with violent speech, advocating for them to commit suicide. Meta’s repeated failure to take the correct enforcement action shows it is not living up to its ideals on LGBTQIA+ safety.

I'm actually a lot happier than I look for midnight on Friday. Thanks to @yasmincurzi Luca Belli and CTS-FGV for a good discussion on 'information integrity'; there's a recording somewhere in this thread.
