Most importantly, we do not support human rights based off of whether others like us or not, we do it because it’s the right thing to do. It is the ethical and moral thing to do.

There is an assumption that oppression and suffering means that you are instantly a good person when in reality it just means that you suffered. I am not a good person because I am a genocide survivor. I am a good person because I chose to be a good person.

Suffering doesn’t make you good, it makes you suffer. But the choice to use your experience of oppression to speak out against other oppression is your own. As is the choice to stay quiet or even celebrate others oppression.

The fact of there being two or more opposing political factions expressing disapproval at someone’s position has never been an indicator that they “must be doing something right!” However it is such a common and attractive fallacy.
