Google Scholar seems to be altering scholarly citation patterns. Citations are getting more concentrated: the same few papers get cited over and over, @jevinwest has found. People lazily cite whatever papers the search engine ranks highly. #metascience2019

Useful perspective for research. Novelty is overrated; refining, communicating, and validating ideas are underrated. Researcher evaluations in industry labs get at some of this—impact is often as/more important than publications. Would like to see more incentive for scholarship.

Reviewers automatically assume that simple is not novel. This is sheer laziness. Yes, it may be simple and obvious in retrospect, but someone had to have that insight first. Simple is good. Simple is robust, easy to implement and reproduce, broadly applicable, etc.

How can causality help machine learning? Turns out it can help for many challenges, incl. OOD generalization, explanation, fairness, and privacy of ML models. Slides from my talk at Data Science Campus Thanks Arthur Turrell for inviting! amitsharma.in/files/causalit…

My open letter marking the Web’s 35th birthday addresses the erosion of the web’s core values and resulting power imbalances that are influencing transformative technologies, reshaping geopolitics and driving economic shifts. The time to act is now. 👇 medium.com/@timberners_le…
