How fitting that Shakespeare's birthday and World Book Day fall on the same day! First published in 1835 but reprinted many times, this Shakespeare Birthday Book allowed the owner to mark the birthdays of their friends and family. 📚 #shakespeare #worldbookday #booktok #library

A Civil War journal written in secret code? 🤔 This 1861 pocket diary belonged to Private Ferdinand Kilbourne, a Union soldier from Pennsylvania. Kilbourne wrote in Pitman shorthand, a phonetic system made up of straight and circular strokes, developed in the nineteenth century.

Last month, attendees of our Industrial Chicago adult education class visited the former site of the Union Stockyards during a neighborhood walking tour! The tour examined traces of the sites that remain, and the new uses for which the structures and sites have been adapted.

Last week we had an extra special visitor... 🐶📚 This good boy waited patiently outside while his human explored the library! And although we know furry friends make the best reading buddies, only service animals are allowed in the reading rooms.
