How are your winter cereals looking this spring? At the NDSU Central Grasslands Research Extension Center our rye and winter wheat are looking pretty good but looks like some winter kill issues with the triticale. We are looking forward to getting cows out to graze next week.

Soil crusting is a challenge of establishing vegetation on reclamation projects. We have a study looking at seeding methods to increase vegetation establishment in crusted soils, including the use of beet pulp, pelleted hydro-mulch. Control (top) and beet pulp (bottom)

We got a week of grazing on our winter cereals this spring, which allowed us to delay turnout on pastures. Research from the previous two years found that just one week of spring grazing provided a 50% return on farmers investment in winter cereal cover crops.

Over the last couple weeks our team has put virtual fence collars on 400 head of cattle. Today we collared 125 head at Black Leg Ranch. We are utilizing this technology to improve grazing efficiency, while achieving conservation goals.

We're partnering with state agencies to assess agricultural impacts related to last week's severe weather. This data will be provided to state partners to support a federal disaster declaration and activate funds to aid in recovery efforts. If you were affected by the storms

Thanks to timely moisture, we’ve had great establishment of native grasses on our reclamation seeding trial near Watford City. Stay tuned for updates on how the different seed mixes performed.

Our annual forage mix (forage oat, forage pea, sorghum-sudan, hybrid turnip) is looking good and should provide a couple months of fall grazing. We will be strip and continuous grazing this annual forage mix. Last year the strip grazing added an additional 12 days of grazing.

We are gearing up for our fall grazing trial evelauting the use of strip grazing and the use of technology such as virtual fence in these systems. Last year we averaged 12 additional days of grazing in strip grazed pastures compared to continuous grazed.

Spent the morning checking on our fall cow chow. We clipped to estimate available forage for grazing in dry matter, as we continue to gear up to start grazing on our integrated crop livestock system projects. 🐮
