Using log(X+1) when estimating population trends is a classic mistakes of many papers in ecology, including famous one published in @Science and NatureEcoEvo about #insect decline. Why is it a mistake? Because it breaks the interpretability of the slope (trend) as a growth rate.
Having mostly reviewed stats papers written by ecologists I figured most ecologists were not trained in math notation. Reviewing stats papers written by statisticians has me updating this belief to "everyone should take a second to review math notation." besjournals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.11…

My next plant-soil feedback theory paper with Rafael D'Andrea is out in Ecology Letters onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/el… -We show that our formulation with an explicit conditionable soil variable leads to a richer set of outcomes than both the std. PSF formulation and LV competition. (1/5)

Just published in eLife - the journal! elifesciences.org/articles/93656 I really enjoyed co-leading this one with Viraj Torsekar | विराज तोरसेकर who wrote this very nice thread. Co-authors Alfred Daniel Johnson (דָּנִיֵּאל), Efrat Gavish-Regev, Yael Hawlena & Dror Hawlena.
Here are some thoughts on teaching #statistics to non-statistical students, specifically those in #applied #ecology degrees. Thanks to Dr William Kay (he/him) and Tiago André Marques for an enjoyable (and not last) collaboration. request pdf here 👉tinyurl.com/33keh22s
