Based on our #2025CountyProfiles data, these metropolitan statistical areas (MSA) and counties have the top five highest fair market rents (FMR) for a two bedroom apartment in the state.

The lowest housing wage to afford a Fair Market Rent apartment in North Carolina is $17.88. The highest housing wage is $36.00 an hour, up to 5x higher than the minimum wage.

More than half of NC's counties have a housing wage higher than $20/hour. Twelve of those counties have a housing wage of over $30/hour, meaning people have to make more than $30 an hour to afford a 2 bedroom apartment at market rent. #2025CountyProfiles
