#OTD in 1980, the sci-fi film THE FINAL COUNTDOWN was released. USS Nimitz travels back in time to the eve of the attack on Pearl Harbor. Of all the types of aircraft featured in the film, only the E-2 Hawkeye is still in service. The Nimitz will be decommissioned next year.

Yesterday, we announced that the upgraded Mogami-class frigate, built by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, was selected for the Navy’s future fleet of general purpose frigates. This will provide us a more lethal fleet and I look forward to working with my Japanese counterparts.

Imagine if that was an Australian LHD engaging in that cross decking exercise. 🤔 How awesome would that be?
